Following public outcry and intervention of Abia State Government, the Nigerian Army has reopened the Umuopara -Onuimo – Obowo axis of the strategic Umuahia – Owerri road for Public use after a week of restriction following the attack on three of its personnel last week by yet-to -be identified Gun men.
Addressing newsmen after conducting the General Officer Commanding 82 -Division, Enugu, Major General H.T Dada and his team comprising the Brigade Commander 14 Brigade Ohafia, Brigadier General Olusola Diya and other Senior military Officers round the scene of incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah Rtd, disclosed the team also resolved to relocate the military check point closer to the Onuimo River for clearer view.
Navy Commander Ubah noted that the location where the military personnel mounted the check point initially was a built up area which made it difficult for the military to exercise freedom of movement to repel the attack, adding that the traditional Ruler of Ezeleke Autonomous Community HRH Eze Ibeakanma and other Community leaders have shown cooperation with the military to enable them relocate because of the inconvenience the road closure has caused them.
He made it clear that the communities in the area have volunteered to start clearing the new location and as well volunteer information as security is everybody’s business.
Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah used the forum to call on the public to keep supporting the Nigerian Army and other security Agencies in their avowed commitment towards nipping the new trend of insecurity in the bud.
Recall, Hanto Daily News had on Tuesday published a story on appeals by Motorists, Commuters and Traders calling for the reopening of the economically important road that links Abia and Imo States.
