President Bola Tinubu has declined assent to the Bill seeking to extend the tenure of service of legislative officers at the National Assembly and the 36 state Houses of Assembly from 35 to 40 years and their retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
President Tinubu conveyed the assent denial in one of the letters sent to the Senate on resumption of plenary after their eight weeks annual recess, read by the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio.
The harmonised controversial retirement age bill was first stepped down in February, 2024 for further research and consultation with stakeholders, after a significant number of senators voted against it.
In his opening remarks, Senator Akpabio expressed empathy with Nigerians in the face of rising economic pressure, harsh realities of inflation and unpredictable market indices.
The Senate President however expressed optimism for a brighter future as some of the initiatives adopted by the executive arm are beginning to bear fruits and provide a glimmer of hope.
Akoabio further charged his colleagues to remain resolute in being the voice of their constituents and to advocate for the rights as well as elevate their status.
Hanto Daily News reports that President Tinubu in another letter to the Senate announced the appointment of Justice Kudirat kekere Ekun as the CJN and sought for her confirmation from the Senate
