Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission announces date for LG elections

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced October 5, 2024, as the date slated for local government elections in the state.

The Chairman RSIEC, Adolphus Enebeli who disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday, said the polls will produce elected council Chairmen and Councillors.

The decision according to Enebeli is a response to the calls from stakeholders for the conduct of elections following the end of the tenure of the previous local government chairmen and councilors.

The announcement indeed marks the commencement of preparations for the elections following the dissolution of the former councils after the expiration of their tenure by Governor Sim Fubara.

Currently, there are caretaker committee chairmen for the state’s 23 local government areas amidst ongoing legal battles regarding amendments to the Local Government Act by the Martins Amaewhule-led group of the House of Assembly
