The protests in Rivers State on Tuesday took a twist as a middle-aged protester carrying dynamite was killed in an explosion in the State Capital, Port Harcourt.
According to reports, the incident which happened at 9:45 a.m. in front of Hotel Presidential, the victim was said to have been killed while trying to discharge an explosive.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the victim’s body was quickly removed from the scene as security forces rushed to the area.
The protest by Wike’s kinsmen, comprising political leaders from various wards in Obio/Akpor, caused significant traffic congestion.
They had gathered at the Rumueme Civic Centre, calling on the Inspector General of Police to ensure strong presence in the councils and resist intimidation.
Despite Police directive against protests, people allegedly loyal to Wike have been on the streets since Monday in solidarity with Ex – Council Chairmen that refused to leave office after the expiration of their tenure as directed by Governor Sim Fubara, who has replaced them with Caretaker Committee Chairmen.
