In another action that truce may no longer be achievable in Rivers State, the House of Assembly has again vetoed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, by consolidating the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Law number 5 of 2015, 2023, and number 4 of 2024 and passing it into a unified law.
According to the embittered house, this is to cure all discrepancies in the individual amendments some of which include appointment into the board of the Local Government Commission, and the payment of political office holders at the local government level.
Speaking during plenary, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, charged members not to be distracted by the Governor’s comments about them as he has no legal powers to say they’re non-existent.
Lending their voices to the call, the majority leader of the House, Hon Major Jack, blasted the governor for referring to them as non-existent while the deputy speaker condemned the governor’s remarks referring to them as unguided.
This development is coming barely 24 hours after the APC Caretaker Chairman in the state called for a resumption of impeachment proceedings against the governor by the Assembly.
It would be recalled that Governor Fubara had on Monday while receiving a high powered delegation from Bayelsa state criticised the attitude of the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly towards his administration, saying the members will cease to exist as legislators if he so decides.
According to the Governor, the lawmakers are existing based on his recognition predicated on the Peace Accord initiated by President Bola Tinubu.
