Retired Police Officers under the contributory pension scheme on Tuesday, (21/05) stormed the National Assembly in Abuja, to protest their unpaid pensions for several months.
The retirees who came from the state chapters to participate in the protest, decried the extreme challenges they have been facing as a result of the refusal of the National Pension Commission to pay them and asked the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to remove them from the contributory pension scheme.
Presenting a- Save – Our – Soul letter to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Chairman of the retirees, Christopher Effiong said many of their members have developed a terminal illnesses and cardiac challenges following the frustration associated with the scheme and called urgent attention to their demands.
Addressing the protesters, the Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Yunus Akintunde, advised the protesters to create a committee that will join in the joint meeting to create a link between the national assembly and the retirees to keep them abreast of the actions being taken to resolve the issue.
