Over ten passengers lost their lives at a police check point located at Amorji Lekwesi community, umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State along the Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway on Thursday as a Trailer conveying a big container rammed into a stationery 18 seater bus waiting for clearance to pass the place.
An eye witness from the community told Hanto Daily News that the trailer which was on high speed could not apply the break timely before getting to the check point located after a hilly portion of the road from the Leru end and unfortunately hit the first road block before the main check point before ramming into the bus loaded with passeners with may losing their lives on the spot.
As at this morning some of the battered bodies of victims were yet to be removed while the policemen were nowhere to be seen.
Speaking some of the Drivers and Commuters, alleged that a lot of extortions and humiliation take place at the check point called on the police authorities to dismantle the check point and investigate the incident which was avoidable.
Meanwhile, the Abia state Police command has stated that only two persons died on the spot while five others who were injured were taken to Christ the King Hospital at Ngodo Isuochi.
In a statement by the PPRO, Maureen Chinaka noted with concern one of the injured persons whose identity is yet unknown was confirmed dead.
According to the statement the corpses have been deposited at the mortuary while the admitted patients have been treated and discharged.
The statement assures that normalcy has been restored to the area while monitoring efforts continue as investigation is ongoing
