Keke operators protest against new mode payment in Umuahia.

Residents of Umuahia, the state capital were trapped this morning following the protest by the tricycle operators over the Abia state government’s decision to move the daily ticket payment for tricycles to lump weekly payment

The situation which took residents by surprise resulted in the people trekking to their offices and other places of transaction.

Speaking in an interview some of the tricycle operators including Kalu Chisom, Ifeanyi Amos, and Mr Peter Oha frowned at the Abia state government’s decision to move the daily ticket which is 350 paid on daily basis to over 2500 naira and also including Saturdays to be paid once in this time of economic hardship and hike in the prices of fuel.

According to them government should as a matter of urgent importance rescind the decision which they lamented is not in the interest of the people, especially tricycle operators.

They wondered why tricycle operators, many of which are operating under hire purchase arrangement should be subjected to such an unfriendly decision and expressed confidence that Governor Alex Otti will heed to their pleas.

Attempts to reach relevant Government officials was not successful as they were said to be in a meeting.
