As the Catholic Community in Nigeria bemoan the kidnapping of their adherents (Medical Students) travelling to Enugu for their convention, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the rescue of the 20 medical students who were abducted in Otukpo, Benue State.
In a release endorsed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi this Saturday, the IGP condemned the kidnapping of students and described as “truly appalling, callous, and unacceptable”.
Part of the release reads, “In a display of unwavering commitment to the rescue, safety, and well-being of the young Nigerians, the IGP has ordered the prompt deployment of a substantial number of human and technical resources to augment the manpower of the Benue State Command, and ensure swift rescue of our beloved students. This initiative encompasses the mobilization of additional tactical units from the FID-STS and FID-IRT, the deployment of advanced helicopters and drones, as well as the use of specialized tactical vehicles to facilitate the search and secure the safe return of the victims.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands with the victims and their loved ones during this challenging time, and we are committed to ensuring the safe return of the students.”
The IGP however appealed to the public to provide useful information and actionable intelligence that may aid the ongoing investigation and the rescue operation and enjoined such Individuals to contact the nearest police station the state’s command control number or the FHQ via Pressforabuja@police.gov.ng and other helplines.
Meanwhile, Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi, has called on the federal government to declare war against insecurity following incessant reports of kidnapping sweeping across the country.
In a statement on X.com this Saturday, Obi wrote, “When I say we should declare war on the economy, power, and insecurity, some people spin the narrative, while others complain. But what else can we do?
“In the last 24 hours, several people have been kidnapped across Nigeria, including about 20 dental students from Maiduguri and Jos in Benue State.”
He further noted “An Anambra State Commissioner and his wife were abducted in Edo State, and others travelling with them were killed. These are just a few of the many tragic incidents happening across the country.”
“We cannot continue living like this,” Obi said. “It’s time for bold action, collective resolve, and a united front against these challenges.”
“We must declare war on this massive insecurity and other ills that threaten our society and work tirelessly to build a safer, more prosperous, and just society for all,” he added.
Anambra State Commissioner for Youths Development, Patrick Aghamba, and his wife were kinapped on Friday while an aide of the commissioner, whose name was given as Kpajie ABK Offiah, an Onitsha youth and a stalwart of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who was travelling with them, was shot dead by the kidnappers.
