The workers-friendly Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has scored high again on issues relating to public service as he has become the first serving Governor in recent history to include Pensioners in the Christmas bonus.
The decision which was announced on Tuesday by the state’s Head of Service, Dr. George Nwaeke has it that each serving and retired worker will receive ₦100,000 Christmas bonus.
While this marks the second time during Fubara’s administration that civil servants will be receiving a Christmas bonus of ₦100,000, which exceeds the national minimum wage, it is however the first time pensioners are included in the initiative.
Though the leadership of the NUP, Rivers chapter, could not be reached, Retirees who spoke to Hanto Daily News including Amachree Lawson, Biobele Aniebi and Tamunoibi Jackrich described the gesture as historic and prayed God to bless and direct the Governor.
They stressed the need for Pensioners to be accorded due respect and acknowledgement, pointing out that the denial of such bonuses in the past had left them wondering how valued they are.
