Fire razes residential building in Umuahia

Reports say a set of flats located at Umuichi Nkata Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State was this Wednesday afternoon (8/1/25) razed down by the fire.

Though the cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained, Eyewitness account says it was the quick intervention of the youths and the arrival of the men of the state Fire service that prevented the fire from spreading to other buildings around the community.

Speaking with Hanto Daily News a resident of the neighborhood, Mr Ifeanyi Stephen, said it was heavy smoke billing from the building that attracted their attention and on entry into the house, there was no person in the house.

Mr. Stephen who couldn’t say the exact cause of the inferno, however pointed out that it might have been caused by a power surge.

Baring his mind on arrival to the scene, one of the occupants of the building, Mr Douglas Nkume, who lost his belongings to the inferno, said he had left his house for work in the morning and was alerted of the incident while in his office.

Mr. Nkume lamented that on getting to the house, his properties and cash worth millions of naira have destroyed by the fire.

The victim who was left in tears pointed out that he was left with nothing and appealed to the government and good-spirited individuals to come to his assistance.
