Fatigue responsible for fatal Abia crash – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Abia State Sector Command says that five not eleven persons as against earlier reports, died in the crash that occurred at Egbelu Mbutu by Cherubim Bus Stop, Isialangwa South LGA along Enugu-Portharcourt Expressway on Sunday,11 August, 2024 at about 1.45pm.

The crash involving a Toyota Previa with registration number BKL 291 ZJ travelling to Enugu, according to the command, rammed into an unnumbered stationary Mack Truck.

A release endorsed by Corp Commander Ngozi Ezeoma, Corps Commander, Abia state sector command, states that eleven persons comprising six male adults, two female adults and three male children were involved in the crash.

According to the release which revealed that two male adults and two male children died on the spot, one male adult later died in the hospital while receiving treatment.

The statement further hinted that the deceased include three male adults and two male children, while the injured victims consist of one male and one female.

According to the command, the male victim was transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, this morning (Monday), for further medical treatment while the female victim remained in Roland Hospital, Umuikaa.

The release also disclosed that three adults and one child survived the crash without injuries, while the only surviving child has been handed over to Umuikaa Police Station.

While lamenting the fatal crash, the release noted that preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the crash was fatigue, assuring however that update on the root cause of the crash would be communicated as soon as FRSC Crash Investigation Experts conclude on the investigation.

Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Mighty Moon Mortuary, close to Umuikaa Junction.
