Governor Alex Otti addressed the women of Abia State at this year’s August Meeting, held at the prestigious International Conference Centre in Umuahia. The annual gathering, a long-standing tradition in Igbo culture, serves as a forum where women come together to discuss community development and family welfare. This year’s meeting was marked by Governor Otti’s heartfelt message, emphasizing the critical role of women in the state and his administration’s efforts to uplift and empower them.
Governor Otti opened his speech with a powerful acknowledgment of the vital role women play in society. “When our mothers are happy, things are better for everyone,” he stated, underscoring the importance of women’s well-being to the overall health and prosperity of Abia State. He described women as the “pillars of society,” highlighting how their unwavering support has been a key factor in the resilience and progress of the state.
Reflecting on the achievements of his administration, Governor Otti proudly announced the provision of a N1 billion interests free loan dedicated to supporting macro and micro businesses across Abia State. He emphasized that a significant portion of these funds had been allocated to women and youth, recognizing their potential as drivers of economic growth. “Our mothers and wives are the reason we haven’t sunk,” Otti remarked, acknowledging the critical role women have played in sustaining the state’s economy through their entrepreneurial spirit and hard work.
The Governor also announced that many of the women in attendance would be receiving inputs to support their home gardening activities, a move aimed at boosting food security and empowering women at the grassroots level. This initiative aligns with his broader vision of creating a self-sufficiency and prosperous Abia State, where women are equipped with the tools they need to contribute to the well-being of their families and communities.
A key theme of Governor Otti’s address was the ongoing transformation in the political and social landscape of Abia State. He boldly declared that “the veils covering women from important seats in governance are being removed in the new Abia.” This statement reflects his administration’s commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of women in decision-making processes at all levels of government. By breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women to lead, Governor Otti is setting the stage for a more inclusive and equitable future for Abia State.
Governor Otti also took the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Abia women, praising their hard work, dedication, commitment, and steadfastness. He noted that women in the state have risen to become “beacons of light in their families and communities,” serving as role models and leaders in various sectors. From business to education to governance, Abia women are showing capacity and making significant contributions to the state’s development.
In closing, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that women continue to occupy a pride of place in the new Abia. “I’m here today because of you,” he told the gathered women, expressing his deep gratitude for their support and his belief in their potential to drive positive change. He pledged to continue working tirelessly to create an environment where women can thrive and contribute to the state’s growth.
The 2024 August Meeting will be remembered not only for the Governor’s inspiring words but also for the tangible commitments made to uplift and empower the women of Abia State. As the meeting concluded, there was a palpable sense of hope and determination among the attendees, who left the event with renewed energy and a shared vision for a brighter, more inclusive future. With Governor Otti at the helm, the women of Abia are poised to play an even greater role in shaping the state’s destiny.
