Reports from Ebonyi State say a labourer was allegedly shot and three others injured this Wednesday in a scuffle between security personnel suspected to be men of the crack squad of the Ebonyi Police Command and a Soldier.
Eyewitness reports have it that the incident occurred at Ugwuechara junction within the Abakaliki metropolis when the crack team stopped a bike man said to be a soldier and wanted to confiscate his motorcycle.
According to the reports, during ensuing scuffle, one by-stander who was shot died instantly and three others sustained injury, when the said soldier and the crack team of the police on stop and search duty were struggling to possess the bike.
Confirming the incident to Journalists on a telephone call, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, disclosed both the policeman and the soldier are in the police custody, while investigation has commenced .
“Police men on stop and search stopped the purported soldier at that time, wanted to search him and he refused.
There was a scuffle between them and the Soldier tried to disarm one of the police operatives.
‘It was at this juncture that the bullet went off and hit a by-stander. It’s not as if they just opened fire on innocent by-standers, during the scuffle, the bullet went off and hit the by-stander.
One died and the three that are injured are responding to treatment,” CP Adaku Uche-Anya Stated.
