There are indications that all may not be moving in the right direction in the intelligence circle of Nigeria as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, this Saturday tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu
Speaking with Newsmen at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, after submitting his letter, Abubakar attributed the reasons for his resignation to personal and family issues.
“There are quite a number of reasons one would do that. Some personal, family issues. But nothing very serious actually.
“I discussed with Mr President, he understood very well and I promised to remain committed with issues under security situations in the country,” he declared.
Abubakar who revealed that President Tinubu graciously approved and accepted the resignation added that he also used the opportunity to thank the President for giving him the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for an extended period of 15 months – which is very rare.
Abubakar had taken over the reins of the NIA in 2018 after his predecessor, Ayo Oke, was suspended in April 2017 by former President Muhammadu Buhari over allegations of fraud and later dismissed on October 30, 2017, following a probe into the allegations.
Before his appointment, he worked as a Senior Special Assistant to the President (SSAP) on Foreign Affairs/International Relations.
Abubakar who is a retired career Foreign Service officer boasts an impressive resume, with extensive experience working with the United Nations.
