Despite efforts being made by Ebonyi State Governments to handle the Recent Cholera outbreak in the State, the death toll has risen to 18 with confirmed cases also shooting up to 80 patients.
Briefing Journalists in his office this Monday, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for health, Dr. Moses Ekuma disclosed that the outbreak earlier recorded in Izzi and Ebonyi a local government areas has also extended to Abakaliki with some remote communities having index cases.
Dr Ekuma pointed out that the State Government has activated rapid response team to affected communities and treatment units activated in these communities in addition to the deployment of health commodities and personnel to different communities.
The Commissioner attributed the yearly occurrence of Cholera outbreak in Ebonyi State to Lack of access to portable pipe borne water and the prevalence of open defecation in rural communities.
it would be recalled that as at Saturday about 13 persons were said to have died from the outbreak.
