There are indications that Abia workers being owed arrears of salaries may forfeit part in their bid to end the issue of backlog.
Abia state commissioner for finance, Mike Akpara while answering question on FLO FM radio in Umuahia as part of activities x-raying the attainments of the Dr Alex Otti led administration in the finance sector, disclosed that the enormity of the arrears could only be cleared if other sectors would be abandoned.
Akpara therefore enjoined such workers to be ready to make sacrifices as was the case in the clearance of backlog of pensions recently as Government inherited about seventeen billion Naira salary arrears.
The finance commissioner used the forum to restate that the Leadership of NUP in Abia willingly assented to an agreement with the present administration to forgo part of their entitlements to end the era of pension arrears in the state as over sixty billion Naira was needed to completely clear the backlog dating back to over a decade.
Akpara however assured that those who have been denied their salaries and pensions as a result of the verification exercise that their challenges would soon be rectified while blaming the situation on a number of issue relating to records of such persons.
While reaffirming that no genuine worker will be sacked, he disclosed that more verification exercises to ascertain genuine certificates are on the way, pointing that there are reports of people operating with fake certificates in the service.
