The Abia State Government has joined the league of State Governments that have accepted to pay the new National minimum wage of N70,000 for workers.
Briefing Newsmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, the state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who broke the cheering news said payment will commence from October and will cut across all categories of workers.
He also announced that the state Ministry of Health will next week offer a free medical outreach at Ugwunnagbo LGA.
According to him, the exercise will comprise free medical consultations, maternal and child healthcare services and free diagnostic tests
The commissioner further made public that the state government will commence the construction of 17 court halls across the 17 local government areas of the state to strengthen the administration of justice in the State.
Prince Kanu used the forum to announce that the governor will soon host para-Olympic athletes who made the state proud, particularly Miss Onyinyechi Mark who won gold in the 61 kg category and Miss Esther Nworgu who also won silver in the 41kg class.
While expressing government’s delight over the success stories of the athletes, the commissioner pointed out that the decision to host them would help encourage the growth of sports in the State.
