Abia State polytechnic Aba has been renamed after the first civilian Governor of the State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.
The institution will henceforth be known as Dr Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.
Making the declaration at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, on Thursday while receiving the body the late former Governor and Minister Ogbonnaya Onu, during an inter-denominational service organized in honour of the former Minister, the incumbent Governor of Abia, Dr Alex Otti described the fallen Hero as an accomplished statesman and trailblazer.
He pointed out that his remarkable run in politics offered him the platform to serve as the first democratically elected governor of Abia State, Minister of the Federal Republic, former National Chairman of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), a former presidential candidate and a founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Otti noted that the death of Dr Onu in April this year has created a social and political void that will be very difficult to fill and commiserated with the people of Abia and Ebonyi states, particularly, the Onu family.
“Dr Ogbonnaya Onu’s administrative genius inspired the setting up of the Abia State Polytechnic Aba, the Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu, and the National Ambassador Newspaper,” Otti stated.
In his speech, the Chairman, Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Nto Mbah urged politicians to emulate the life of the late former Governor of Abia State describing him as a very patriotic Nigerian who played politics without bitterness.
In his words “politicians, especially in Igbo land should follow Onu’s footsteps and be patriotic in all their dealings”.
The Royal Father noted with delight that the deceased impacted greatly to the development of Abia State by laying a solid foundation for the State and prayed God to grant hi soul a peaceful repose.
